I was practicing some taans/laikaaris in “Tu hae Saayi” in Darbari (beautifully sung by the late Pt Kedar Bodas) and around 1 min in, I was playing with a structure and ended up finding a “chand” that was gorgeous that started on eighth matra; yes, not ninth/kali. A little atypical but it worked as it did because the phrase consisted of triplets of 3 beat phrases (ie 3x3 + sum so 8th beat start). Text markers point it all out in the video.

It was sounding alright and with an extra “karim”, it was a perfect 16 beat wrap. However, it wasn’t immediately clear why it sounded alright. I was practicing some taans/laikaaris in “Tu hae Saayi” in Darbari (beautifully sung by the late Pt Kedar Bodas) and around 1 min in, I was playing with a structure and ended up finding a “chand” that was gorgeous that started on eighth matra; yes, not ninth/kali. A little atypical but it worked as it did because the phrase consisted of triplets of 3 beat phrases (ie 3x3 + sum so 8th beat start). Text markers point it all out in the video.

It was sounding alright and with an extra “karim”, it was a perfect 16 beat wrap. However, it wasn’t immediately clear why it sounded alright.
